Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit was captured on 25 June 2006 by Palestinian armed groups in an attack on an army base in the south of Israel, near the Gaza Strip, in which two other soldiers were killed and a third was injured. He has been held in secret ever since; he has not been allowed to communicate with the outside world, or to have contact with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). He holds dual Israeli and French citizenship.
