| Link Maruoka Castle, located in Maruoka in Fukui Prefecture, is famous for having the oldest donjon (keep) of any Japanese Castle. Maruoka Castle was built in 1576 under orders from Shibata Katsutoyo, however it was destroyed in the 1948 Fukui Earthquake. Only the donjon was rebuilt in 1955 using materials largely from the original structure. The donjon is a designated Important Cultural Property. |
