The Great Mosque is considered one of the oldest yet grandest mosques in the region. Located in the heart of downtown Gaza, the Mosque spreads over an area of 4100 m2, placing its gate within a walking distance from the local market. Perhaps one of the most interesting and controversial aspects of this mosque, however, is that unlike typical mosques, this one was built on the ruins of an Idol worshiping temple and a Christian Church.
