The harbour at this location is Sudan's oldest port. It was an embarking point for Muslim pilgrims making the Hajj to Mecca before it became a slave port. The routes that ran parallel to this location increased the importance of the "large scale Muslim conversions in the Funj Kingdom and Darfun Sultanate".
