This fort sits on the former site of the famous lighthouse of Alexandria (known as the Pharos). It served as point of navagation and as an archectual model for lighthouses all over the world. There are currently only a few representations of the lighthouse that still exist. Once one of the seven wonders of the world, the lighthouse was destroyed by an earthquake in 1303.
