Dealing with the death of a loved one is never easy, but maybe some things should be difficult because they are important. Have you ever had to do something that was very difficult, but you did it "because you knew you had to"? Did you ever perform a "funeral" for a pet? What was the experience like?
Chapter Fourteen: Steinbeck introduces early indications of prejudice against the Oklahoma migrant farmers.
The Joads, like the many other migrants are caught in a bind. They can not stay in Oklahoma and survive and they are not welcome by all where they are going. If you were with the Joads, what would you do? Rumors and fears grow that the migrants may get violent. Are these fears well-founded given what we know about the Joads? Does the underdog have a right to fight for "just" treatment?

Chapter Fifteen: An encounter with prejudice against the migrants at a roadside cafe
In the previous chapter, Steinbeck introduces the growing prejudice against the migrants. What happens in this chapter that causes Mae's prejudice to fade? What is the message in this chapter that might have value in our times?
