The Saudi government built a military post at Sharoorah, on the southernmost edge of the Empty Quarter in an effort to secure a disputed border with Yemen. 400km from the nearest permanent settlement, Sharoorah was connected to the rest of the kingdom by a two-lane asphalt road which maintenance crews keep free of sand.
