Kandahar Airfield is 16km southeast of Kandahar city and was built by the US in the 1960s, with refurbishments completed in 2007 for military and civilian flights. The facility has been maintained by NATO since 2006 and includes an advanced treatment hospital for some of the war's
worst casualties.
