military contingent is in the capital of Turkmenistan to assist in refuelling operations and processing other supplies in transit to Afghanistan. The terminal at Ashgabat International Airport and the Mary-2 airfield are described as "subsidiary support bases" rather than "military bases", preserving the country's perceived neutrality. The US also utilises the Turkmen road and rail network.
