Have you ever spent time near the ocean or on a small island surrounded by water?

The book, The Cay, tells the story of a boy living on the island of Curacao off the island of Venezuela during World War II. He and his mother are trying to escape the war and head back to their home in Virginia.

The ship on which they are traveling sinks. Phillip survives the boat wreck only to be trapped on an island with a black man named Timothy and a cat named Stew. The accident leaves Phillip blind. Not only does he have to learn adjust to his blindness, but he must learn to survive on the barren island in the Caribbean Sea.
