This fortress dates back to the 14th century, and considering its age and size is incredibly well preserved. Many battles have been fought here and it is representative of the tumult which occurred in the region. It is known as the last line of defense separating Hungary from the Ottoman Empire and in 1979 was declared as a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance and is under state protection of Serbia.The location at the part of the river where it narrows into the Iron Gates was strategically thought of.
