In the early morning hours on Saturday, 14th December 2002, the 1987 built, Norwegian-flagged car carrier "TRICOLOR" collided with the 1982 built, Bahamas-flagged cargo vessel "KARIBA" in the French EEZ of the English Channel.
As a result of the collision, "TRICOLOR" capsized and sank. It came to rest on its port side hull. The depth of water on site is approximately 27 metres. The starboard side hull is submerged on high tide, but above the surface on low tide.
At the time of the incident, the "TRICOLOR" was trading for Wallenius Wilhelmsen and bound for the United States with a cargo of, inter alia, more than 2,800 high value cars on board.
The "TRICOLOR" was declared a total loss and the French authorities have ordered the owners to remove the fuel oil as well as the wreck itself.
Measures have been taken to remove the fuel oil and the owners are seeking to comply with an order issued by the French authorities to remove the wreck.
The owners have insurance cover for wreck removal liabilities and costs in the Gard P&I Club.
