Vicki really enjoyed the hands-on aspect of her program. For example, she studied in a Medical Practice and Policy program, which was taught by physicians, and took classes in a local hospital. Vicki had the chance to make her "book learning" come to life: She learned about various diseases, got the chance to talk with patients and write up patient history reports, and traveled to different hospitals in Denmark and around Europe.

She writes, "The coolest part of this was learning some clinical skills, such as putting in an IV, setting an arm in a cast, suturing and (my favorite) performing a lumbar puncture (aka a spinal tap--this we did on a dummy, not actual patients!).

"Studying abroad gave me such a sense of empowerment! I didn't know anyone when I first arrived in Denmark, was living with strangers in a homestay, didn't speak Danish, had never been away from my family for so long (I had never even been outside of North America!) and wasn't even sure why I would do something so crazy as study abroad. But after four months, I left with amazing friendships, a new Danish mother and sister and more confidence in my abilities to handle new and unexpected situations on my own."
