A report from an eyewitness in a southwestern suburb of Tripoli described seeing 3 Chinook helicopters heading north towards the center of the city. The Chinooks passes 30 minutes before fixed wing jets started flying and the helicopters made several passes traveling southbound and northbound again, clearly dropping off something and loading up again. He said he heard fighter jets roaring and described them as making sharp turns from a distance several times, it seemed, over the same area. Bab al-Azizia, a 6 km square military barracks and compound, is the main base location for the Libyan leader Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi. It is located at the northern end of Airport Highway, allowing direct high speed road access to Tripoli International Airport. The site was bombed on April 15, 1986 by the US.
