This branch links the main line Liverpools dock system. Built in 1846 the branch shows the distinctive stonework of Jesse Hartley, Dock Engineer.

A very popular stretch of canal. The canal was started here back in 1770 at Halsall Cutting.

This branch links the main line to the River Ribble and then via the Ribble Link, the Lancaster Canal. This section is more like a river than a man made canal. The canal passes Rufford Old Hall on the way.

The Leeds Liverpool Canal winds through fields up to the outskirts of Wigan. This section of canal was part of the Stop Line 14 in World War Two and many pill boxes and defences can be seen along the way.

Former arm of the canal which once entered a coal mine.
Only the junction of this arm remains.
It is now a marina.

One of the most famous places along the Leeds Liverpool Canal is Wigan Pier. One of the most infamous for boaters is the Wigan flight of 21 locks.

 The Leeds Liverpool Canal rises up the Johnsons Hillock locks then clings to the edge of a steep hillside. The bridges are John Rennie. The canal continues up to the outskirts of Blackburn.
