Herbert takes Gustav Mahler unfinished 10th symphony and remasters to create his new album. Death is a central theme in Mahler unfinished symphony, something that Herbert wanted to capture. He fitted a coffin with a car radio, played the Tenth on it and recorded the result, but to this Herbert said “my version is not intended to just be fascinated with death though, it is supposed to be an amplification of that unsettling balance he creates between light and dark. I want to relish the friction of the fearful with the glorious".

Kenny Graham (1924-1997) is one of Britain's foremost jazz composers and arrangers.

Omar is known as one of the greatest guitarists to come from the Arab world. Born in Cairo, 1945.

The two met in 1966 after Lewis had just recorded the keys for Percy Sledge's hit 'When a man loves a woman'.

This track is from the 1977 concept album that earned them their fame, 'Seven Deadly Sins'. Out on Derby.

Theo grew up in Chicago, Illinois listening to jazz musicians like Miles Davis, Nina Simone, and George Gershwin.

He graduated from the Chicago Academy of the Arts and went to study at the Kansas City Art Institute. While at KCAI, Theo concentrated on sound sculptures, creating sonic pieces by combining live instruments, human voices, and looped recordings.

Another aspect of Theo Parrish's productions are his re-edits, often of old disco, funk or soul records. He is almost as renowned for his expansive and genre-hopping live DJ sets as his productions, and plays a monthly residency at the London nightclub Plastic People.

Sun Ra (1914 – 1993) was a jazz musician piano and synthesizer player, poet and philosopher known for his "cosmic philosophy," musical compositions and performances. Ra claimed that he was part of the "Angel Race" and not from Earth, but from Saturn.

His band The Arkestra was an ensemble with an ever-changing lineup and name with Sun Ra at the head. His music was extremely varied with influences from virtually the entire history of jazz including ragtime, swing music, bebop and free jazz. He was also a pioneer of electronic music and space music being one of the first musicians to make extensive use of electronic keyboards.

Recently migrated from the capital city of the West Midlands – Coventry – to the southerly climes of London, Ghostpoet looks set to make his mark on 2010.

His The Sound Of Strangers EP sidles in to the public domain this summer. It presents an eloquent summary of where the rapper has been… and indeed where he’s going. Four tracks, three original compositions blessed with playful prose, one remix of A Tribe Called Quest’s Electric Relaxation (Relax Yourself Girl)… and a feature from left-leaning pop mastermind Micachu, who also produced the EP… Don’t sleep on this young, inventive, British MC – he’s destined for greatness.

290: Tricky - Early Bird

Originally, Tricky was a member of the Wild Bunch, a Bristol-based rap troupe that eventually metamorphosed into Massive Attack during the early '90s. Tricky provided pivotal raps on Massive Attack's groundbreaking 1992 album, Blue Lines. The following year, he released his debut single, "Aftermath."

Tricky's debut album, Maxinquaye, appeared in the spring of 1995. Not only did the album receive overwhelmingly positive reviews when it was released, but it entered the U.K. charts at number two, despite the total lack of daytime radio airplay. At the end of the year, Maxinquaye topped many year-end polls in Britain, including Melody Maker and NME.

DJ Shadow (born Josh Davis) is widely credited as a key figure in developing the experimental instrumental hip-hop style associated with the London-based Mo' Wax label. Scientist was a protégé of King Tubby, one of the originators of dub music.
He began building his own amplifiers and would buy transformers from Tubby’s Dromilly Road studio, and while there would keep asking Tubby to give him a chance at mixing.

Sepalcure’s combination of love for bass and 90s house acapellas is the culmination of a cathartic two week collaboration between Travis Stewart (Machine Drum) and Praveen Sharma (Praveen & Benoît).
Their mix of tribal dub, house and two step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics.

This track is off the "Fleur" EP, due for release on Hotflush in January 2011.

Hancock is one of jazz music’s most important and influential pianists and composers. He embraced elements of rock, funk, and soul while adopting freer stylistic elements from jazz.

As part of Miles Davis’ “second great quintet” Hancock helped redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section, and was later one of the first jazz musicians to embrace synthesizers and jazz funk.

They began life in a warehouse somewhere in South East London.

Flashman is the collaborative work of North London's Fred Deakin (from Lemon Jelly and Airside) and Robin Jones (The BETA Band and Aliens).

356: Sufjan Stevens - Vesuvias

American singer songwriter and musician Sufjan Stevens hails from Detroit. His music often deals in epic themes both musically and thematically with rich orchestral layers making up much of his output to date. His bold plan to record an album for every one of America's states may have only yielded two albums, one about his native Michigan and another based on Illinois but they are both sprawling masterpieces in their own right.

'Vesuvias' which Gilles played on 12/1/11 is taken from the album Age Of Adz which swells with more of an electronic style than his previous work. It was released in October 2010 on Ashmatic Kitty.

357: Maddslinky - Further Away feat Tawiah

One of the pinoneers of dubstep and breakbeat garage, Maddslinky aka Zed Bias, Phuturistix or Ruffcutt Bias hails from Manchester.

His numerous projects have been a huge influence on such big names as Skream who also appears on Maddslinky's recent album 'Make A Change' alongside Mr Scruff, Tawiah, Jenna G, Ghost 1, Mighty Moe and Nile Sugar among others.

358: Brother Ah

Brother Ah is an American jazz French hornist. He was raised in Bronx and studied classical French horn at the Manhattan School of Music and then at the Vienna State Academy.

Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s he worked with numerous jazz stars as a session musician among them Donald Byrd, John Coltrane and Sun Ra, among many others.

Brother Ah mixes different style from around the world including African, American Japanese, European and Indian. His fusion style can be heard on his album Move Ever onward released in originally released in 1975 on Divine Records. The album has since be reissued by Ikef. Brother Ah continues to work and record teaching in Washington D.C. He also hosts a weekly radio show which looks at global music and Jazz.

Born in Tochigi, Japan, Fumio began playing jazz while studying classical piano at the prestigious Kunitachi College of Music.

 
Since 1993 he has been releasing music through his own label 'Mix Dynamite' .

Soil & PIMP Sessions are a six-piece Brownswood-signed Japanese jazz band made up of Shacho ("agitator"), Tabu Zombie (trumpet), Motoharu (sax), Josei (keyboards), Akita Goldman (double bass) and Midorin (drums).Gilles gave the band their first ever UK gig when he invited them to play at Cargo in London in 2005.

Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet is one of the finest producers and remixers around at the moment.

As well as producing his own breed of electronica, hip-hop and jazz Four Tet has produced superb remixes for the likes of Aphex Twin, Radiohead, Bonobo, The XX, Explosions in the Sky and Anti-Pop Consortium to name but a few.

Hebden has also recently collaborated with the late jazz drummer Steve Reid, Rocketnumbernine as well as a recent single with Thom Yorke and Burial.

The Danish electronic soul duo Quadron is the work of singer Coco Maja Hastrup Karshøj and musician / producer Robin Hannibal. 


 
Both Coco and Robin are part of the soul collective Boom Boom Bachelors which formed 2008, and Quadron formed out of this in 2009.

LA 3-piece The Stepkids are yet another strong fresh signing to Stones Throw Records. 


 
The band is made up of guitarist Jeff Gitelman who has previously played with Lauryn Hill, obby Brown, Jaheim, Pharoahe Monch and then Alicia Key. Along with Dan Edinberg (bass and keys) and drummer Tim Walsh, together The Stepkids create a mix of funk, psychedelic and folk.

The man who along with Melo-D and Rhettmatic founded the legendary hip-hop crew Beat Junkies in 1992. The group greatly contributed to the rise of instrumental hip-hop throughout the 90s.

Tom Scott is a jazz saxophonist and composer from LA. He is a member of the Blues Brothers and the band leader for jazz fusion band LA Express.


 
Born in LA in 1948, Tom followed in the footsteps of his film-composer father Nathan Scott with several compositions for TV including the Starsky and Hutch theme. He has also collaborated with the likes of Quincy Jones, Joni Mitchell, Blondie, Steely Dan and Pink Floyd.

 
Gilles played the track 'Today' on 16/3/11. The song was sampled by Pete Rock & CL Smooth's for their 1992 track 'They Reminisce Over You'.

Jazz/Electronica outfit Rocketnumbernine is the work of brothers Ben and Tom Page from East London. 


 
Originally starting out as an improv duo, Rocketnumbernine have caught a great deal of attention particularly through their affiliation with Four Tet, whom the duo performed live with at Gilles' Worldwide Awards night in London in January 2011. 

 
'Rocket number nine' is the name of a Sun-Ra track.

Raphael Saadiq is a renowned R&B singer, songwriter and record producer.


 
As a producer Raphael has worked with the likes of John Legend, Mary J Blige, TLC and D'Angelo who along with Raphael Saadiq was also part of the production collective The Ummah with J Dilla and members of A Tribe Called Quest. 

 
The track 'Good Man' is taken from Raphael's recent album Stone Rollin and was played by Gilles on 16/3/11.

417: Matthew Halsall

Manchester-born jazz trumpeter Matthew Halsall is currently making waves as one of the most talented jazz musicians in Britain today. Gilles himself has cited Matthew's band as one of his favourite jazz groups around at the moment.

Having played trumpet since he was 6, the 26 year old has also been touring for almost half is life having played in such far reaching places as France, Italy, Spain, Russia, Holland, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Australia and America since he was just 14.

Matthew Halsall released his debut album 'Sending My Love' on the independent Jazz label Gondwana in 2008.

418: Photek

One of the most respected players on the drum n bass scene as well as an acclaimed film composer, Rupert Parkes a.k.a Photek hails from St. Albans and is currently based in Los Angeles.

Photek first released music in 1992 however it wasn't until 1997 that he released a full length album. Modus Operandi featured ambient sounds, complex jazz-inspired drum patterns and perfect synth melodies that would become typical of Photek's sound.

Most recently Photek released his Avalanche EP through his own label Photek Productions in February 2011.

Hip-hop producer Aleksander “Exile” Manfrediis hails from Los Angeles. The son of a musical family (His father, Albert Trent Manfredi and grandfather Alberico Manfredii were both musicians), Aleksander went from learning accordion in his grandfather's garage to teaming up with Aloe Blacc who was only 16 at the time.

Since then Exile has gone on to produce beats for the likes of Mobb Deep, Jurassic 5, Akon, Snoop Dog, Ghostface Killah and Slum Village.

Exile released his first instrumental album 'Radio' in 2010 on All City Records.

Although often labeled under the tired 'chill-wave' banner, Bullion is a lot more than that.

One of the finest up and coming producers around, the West-Londoner first caught a great deal of attention with his mash up of Beach Boys' Pet Sounds with J Dilla.

His more recent releases have seen Bullion sample old folk tunes, use tribal beats and create a strange hybrid that is always danceable.

A fantastic talent who when she started out was way ahead of her time.

Leila Arab was born in Iran but moved to London in 1979. She started out releasing music on Aphex Twin's label Rephlex Records including her hit 'Don't Fall Asleep' before releasing further stuff on Warp and XL.

As of early 2011 she is working on her fourth album.
