Triangle square: a lovely wooden field located in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Granville Island. This small gathering place found next to the Public Market is home to many artists, performing music on a daily basis for the visitors of the island. Yet, many of these artists remain relatively anonymous, ignored by the general population as they go about their day.
The locative soundscape “In Triangle Square”, intended to be displayed on location, recounts the fictional story of one of these buskers, performing week after week in that very same location for 30 years with little to no recognition. While seemingly sad and tragic, the piece was created with the goal of inviting listeners to engage more actively with the talent of Granville Island, preventing the same tragic fate as that of the old busker.

A soundscape of walking beside public market on Granville Island. People on Granville Island are optimism in many ways, no matter how big the risk is, there is always a way out, hope is the most important thing.
The locative soundscape “Priceless” tells a story of a person just got fired and she is walking beside the market, she goes back to the industrial generation and heard the steam sound and hammer sound, and she uses the song “million dollars” to travel through the time to the present. The contrast between industrial sound and the traffic sound can show it. And the coins that jiggle in the pocket shows how much money she left and how much she donates.
Either today or past, the art on the Granville Island is the most valuable thing in the world.

A Morning Back in The Day brings the attention to the most intensive time on Granville Island. Before Granville Island was a “public place” for entertainment, workshops, and education, it was the busiest Industrial Central in Vancouver. During the early 1900s, the Island was full of tin clad buildings, rail tracks, cranes and docks.
A Morning Back in The Day explores the sound on Granville Island by beginning with an engine sound; it introduces the entrance to the Island. The out-tuned 1920s’ radio sound sets the time period, also leads to the sounds that were happened on Granville Island. By layering the sounds and manipulate the tempo of each sound clip, it creates a fantastical atmosphere to celebrate the most active era of Granville Island.

The current soundscape explores the radical transition of Granville Island from a mechanical and industrialized compound to the current artistic and welcoming space for tourists, family gatherings and performing and practicing artists.
Beginning with a simple beat of a mixture of mechanical sounds and industrialized noises that was once pervasive on Granville Island, the artist wishes to take the listener aback to the mismatch of his/her current surrounding today. Slowly transitioning to the relative shorter phase of reconstruction and remodeling Granville Island to be space for visitors, the soundscape then welcomes the current common sounds of the same space today: of tourists, animal habitat and music. The soundtrack featured within the soundscape is by a busker duo that frequents Granville Island at times, named Sons of Granville.
The locale that the artist intends for this soundscape to be listened to is the outdoor space outside of the Public Market, facing False Creek. The Public Market was previously the BC Equipment Ltd, which produced corrugated tin.

For our sound project on this #phonar world map, students explored ideas about real space location, histories of site, locative sound practices, mapping and social media tools. They researched a location on Granville Island and responded to this location by creating a locative soundscape. The soundscape is intended to be listened to on location at Granville Island.
