0: Ebisu Garden Place | Resturants
2011, 2009: Ebisu Garden Place was recommended to me by an ex-colleague from Japan mainly for the food at the top of the towers, but what an amazing place to visit up to Christmas (I was there in November).
It was literally::text like stepping into a Christmas fairytale with the most beautiful Christmas decorations I have ever seen.
Just for the record the food was very good.

2011, 2010, 2009: Roppongi Hills is essentially a community hub built to "up" the perception of the area, which it has done quite successfully.
Features both cafes, restaurants and one of the most amazing outdoor views at the 56th floor of the Mori Art Museum.
Más sobre Roppongi Hills | Culture2: Mori Art Museum (Mori Bijutsukan)
2011, 2009: Huge museum. In 2009 we saw an Ai Weiwei exhibition and in 2011 an exhibition of a mixture of artist. I got a feeling all exhibitions there are worth seeing.
AND if they aren't, do still go as Mori Art Museum gives you the chance to go up on the roof (55rd floor) and stand outside and look over Tokyo.
Do not get me wrong here; The view is absolutely awesome.

2011, 2010, 2009: You may have heard that Akihabara is the geek heaven of Tokyo.
I beg to differ. I found Akihabara disappointing compared to the 5 stories high shopping of geekness called "Nakano Broadway" full of toys, magazines, manga, anime, vintage geekness, Dolphie Dreams and so much more.
In 2010 we stayed in Nakano for 9 days.
Be warned; Nobody speaks English here, but on the other hand the food around here is brilliant and cheap.

2011, 2010: This is the shop to go to for anybody with an interest in design of any kind. Several books in English making this a prime stop for design tourists::text like me.

2011, 2009: The Studio Ghibli Museum is a smaller, but magical museum dedicated to the fantastic Anime films from Studio Ghibli such as "Howl's Moving Castle" and "Spirited Away".
Great cafe as well and I love the fact they show a movie in there which is not shown outside the museum.
Más sobre Ghibli Museum | Anime7: Cerulean Tower | Hotel
2011, 2010, 2009: Cerulean Tower is described as a 4.5 star hotel, but make no mistake; this hotel is better than any 5 star hotel I have stayed in in Europe.
It is located right in the middle of buzzing Shibuya and 3 minutes walk from the underground station.
If I have to point out any short-comings then it would have to be no free wifi.
Más sobre Cerulean Tower | Hotel8: 恵 Kei | Local Izakaya
2011: Fantastic Izakaya with a great bartender/host responding with speed to everybody's (semi-drunk) SUMIMASEEEEN delivering both beer and assorted snacks such as shown.
Very close to Cerulean Tower Hotel if you choose to stay there.
Más sobre 恵 Kei | Local Izakaya9: New York Bar and Grill | Lost in Translation
2011, 2009: The bar from "Lost in Translation" and yes, the film captures the atmosphere accurately.
It IS pricy, but it is a top quality place with top quality food and a top view over the city.
Remember to get the Yamazaki 12-year-old whiskey by Suntory... "For a relaxing time, make it Suntory time."
Más sobre New York Bar and Grill | Lost in Translation10: Kaoriya | Great soba restaurant
2011: This restaurant is a pure representation of both Japanese modesty and desire to produce the best. The place is low-key deco (see photo of front door below) and mainly serve Soba dishes but they are the best I have had. Fantastic.
Más sobre Kaoriya | Great soba restaurant11: Fantastic grilled food
2011: Very cheap and very good drink and grill place. Staff doesn't speak English but English speaking local customers proved very friendly and helpful.
Unfortunately I don't know the name of this place, but it is easy to find. It is on the 2nd floor of the building directly opposite H&M in Shibuya.
Más sobre Fantastic grilled food12: Sakura | Self-made Okonomiyaki cafe
2011: Prepare yourself to be patient if you want to find this hidden local place serving self-made okonomiyakis and beer!
Look for a place with the whole front being covered in a piece of art made out of a scaffolding as per picture below. You need to get to the back of that building to find Sakura.
Más sobre Sakura | Self-made Okonomiyaki cafe13: Ameyayokocho | Street market
2011: Compared to the size Ameyayokocho street market feels surprisingly local, or maybe it was just the lack of tourists in general after the earthquake. Either way well worth visiting. Great street food to be found as well.
Más sobre Ameyayokocho | Street market14: Loft | Hand-crafting and hobby store
2011: For handcrafting and hobby things LOFT is significantly better than "Tokyo Hands" and also features local art.

2011 UPDATE
Following the Earthquake part of the market has been closed for tourists so check before you go.
2010: Best way to spend the first jetlagged morning is going to the fish market very early.
Make sure to try some of the insanely good sushi in one of the restaurants nearby.

2011, 2010, 2009: This is the geek centre of Tokyo, full of lights, electronics and toys.
It can be quite confusing and crowded and I got the feeling as a tourist you pay much more than local bargain hunters.
For a more calm alternative check out Nakano Broadway.

Note the Meiji Shrine is very close so you can get both the hip Japan of today and the traditional Japan of the past in one go.

The whole mall is full of colourful teen girls and loud music, very trendy spot on a mass-market scale.

2010, 2009: If you are a Final Fantasy fan this is a must see. Note that most of the toys can be bought cheaper in other shops. I recommend going to a shop called Robot Robot in Nakano Broadway.
The shop is actually not that big though. Don't expect a Toys-R-us.
Note, this shop is not far from the Park Hyatt Hotel in which "Lost in Translation" was filmed. See other entry.

2010, 2009: This little fabric shop is in the middle of Shibuya and it worth the visit even if you are not planning on buying fabric.
The first thing you will notice is all the colourful fabrics, but after you've spend a bit of time in there the second thing you will notice is the amount of light bulbs.
...and THEN you'll notice: There are no shadows anywhere in the shop!! it is so well-lit
