0: Afternoon rush hour trouble

Roads from the CBD towards Soweto are highly congested in the afternoon peaks at the best of times. If the timing of the convoy is according to plan, Thursday will be particularly rough for commuters.

2: Buccleuch Interchange

One of the busiest interchanges in the country (and on the continent). Although the convoy is due to reach it well outside peak times, it will likely disrupt traffic on all roads (N1, M1, N3) in all directions - badly.

3: Diepkloof Interchange

If the convoy is slightly slower than expected, it will hit the Diepkloof area around peak times. Good news for commuters leaving the city for Soweto at the time, but bad news for anyone caught in the interchange.

4: Turnaround

If the convoy is a hundred vehicles or more, as Cosatu hopes, turning it around over the highway bridge will take a while - effectively blocking both sides of the highway for what will seem::text like an eternity to anyone trapped in the resulting jam.

7: Crossing to the M2

Although it is not along the normal flow of traffic, the convoy is likely to be directed onto the M2 East along the most direct line, rather than getting tangled up with Main Reef Road.

8: Getting onto the highway

The convoy is due to use Harrison, Wolmerans and Smit streets to access the M1 north.

18: Turnaround point

The halfway mark, before the convoy turns back on itself. It should be reached by no earlier than 12:30, which means south-bound traffic along the R21 is unlikely to be affected until then -- but the start of rush-hour could be ugly on the return route.

20: OR Tambo Airport

If all goes according to plan, the motorway entrances to the airport will be jammed around 10AM. Access from the north, via the airfreight terminal, may be possible, but the Gautrain is the safest bet.
