1: Collins Rd, Everton Hills

Claire: I was out for a run along Collins Road, Everton Hills (near Alfredson Park) when a nasty character started swooping. Unfortunately for me he promptly recruited another buddy and the two commenced their torturous pursuit.

Having experienced some severe childhood trauma of this regard, I immediately turned into a hysterical mess fleeing for my life! Thankfully for me a lovely chap, indeed my knight in shining armour, came to my rescue. Seeing my distress, he ran across the road from his parked car yelling instructions, "Stop Running!!" "Wave a stick", and subsequently providing me with such a stick to defend myself with.

My poor 6mth old got a right fright with my erratic behaviour (some may call it frenzied panic) but unlike her mother, recovered unscathed. I however have regressed to my traumatised youth with flashbacks of running the gauntlet (aka carpark) up to the PCYC afterschool care!

I understand that you sometimes inform the unaware public of the perils these bloody magpies cause, I hope this can assist some others in avoiding the little buggers!!

2: Ferny Hills

Warren: I was attacked by a plover this morning in Ferny Hills (they don’t get as close as maggies but still). I presume the plovers have just started to lay eggs.

9: Cnr Flockton St & Redgrave St, Stafford Heights

John: There is a family of magpies roosting in a park at the corner of Redgrave St, Lanchester St, and Flockton St Stafford Heights.

I have lived here for more than 10 years and have never seen them attack a pedestrian.

They will have a go at people (usually children) on push bikes because an idiot child on a push bike belted them with a stick several years ago.

There are a lot of people who ride bikes to the dog park in Lanchester Steet. I suggest bike riders dismount and walk the bike passed the park around this time of year.  That said, if they are wearing a helmet they are not likely to come to harm if attacked.

Michelle: A friend and I were at the Hidden World Park at Fitzgibbon when one of our children was faced with a very angry magpie who tried to "swoop" him. This was in the play area itself. I noticed a nest with a magpie in it in a large gum tree directly behind the playground. Parents need to beware during Magpie season.

20: Edward St, Caboolture

Alice: We have had a magpie attacking since about June till now he has not drew blood until the 23 / 08 / 2011. The young girl was heading out her gate to go to school and the magpie named pete swooped down and got her on the head and drew blood. We know that thier breeding season is here soon. I have been out there when he has been swooping and the people and some school kids throw sticks and stone at them. The young girl next door did not do anything but walk out her gate. The wildlife people need to do something about the magpies.

Michelle: I got swooped (and hit in the helmet) while out riding on Sunday on Kelvin Grove Road, Kelvin Grove. The first times were on the way in to the city between Banbridge roads and Moy Street, I got swooped numerous times and hit 3 times. It was pretty persistent and followed me all the way up the street.

On the way home it swooped twice (and hit), same area, but on the outbound side of Kelvin Grove. I was travelling pretty fast so thought it would ignore me but it was pretty keen.

I also got swooped a little later on Lanham Ave, Grange. I think this one is already on your map. Must be the same one as last year, when I had to learn to avoid that road while out cycling.

Peter: Magpie aggressive attacks to cyclists, generally angles attack from behind targeting the Right and Left hand side of the head. Attacks occur up and down the hill regardless of speed that the cyclist may be doing (60km/h) and will continue even if other traffic (cars and trucks) are present.  Can be dangerous during high traffic volume times if rider is unaware.

99: Cooroy Police Station

Anne: Every year there are numerous attacks from the Magpies which nest in the park next to the Cooroy Police Station and this is extremely dangerous due to the amount of traffic, which uses the roundabout which takes in five roads. The traffic includes school children on bicycles, plus adults on bicycles, who are under constant attack from the birds. Last season my husband had to assist a child in the middle of the roundabout, who was attacked on her bike and was left terrified and with a bleeding head by the Magpie, this attack was reported to the Police, but they are unable to do anything about the birds. Also an elderly lady was attacked, bleeding profusely from a nasty beak wound to the side of her head, just missing her eye and had to be rescued from the middle of the road by a motorist who fortunately stopped, thereby stopping all the cars on the roundabout, until she was safe and taken to the adjacent doctors surgery.

The birds continue to attack cyclists, chasing them as far as across the rail bridge into Elm Street and as this is one of the most accident prone intersections in Cooroy, this extra safety hazard is really not needed. The birds should be moved for the safety of everyone, but the children and the elderly in particular. We never walk up Myall Street towards the Police roundabout, with out a stick or a hat, and even then I have received a nasty peck through a quite solid cotton hat. Thanks for this service.

157: Cinderella Dve, Logan City

Lois: We live in Cinderella Drive & have one of the magpies in question's nest in a tree in our back yard. This family of magpies has been breeding here for many years & this year is no different.
The funny thing is, they have never attacked us if we are walking.
We have been here for 40 years.
One or both of the magpies wait for people on bikes to ride by, then swoops, attacking them. If the cyclist dismounted for that strip of street, they would not attack. It is only at nesting time that they do this & I understand the problem.
I think if people were educated about this, they would be more tolerant to the situation. I have seen some people with plastic ties on their helmets that stick up all over & are very effective.
It is only for a short time that this happens, & let's face it - this is a yearly problem & should be accepted as a natural occurrence.
This is an old story of nesting birds. Maybe the Council should put up signs during Magpie season to warn people - these signs could be taken down at the end of nesting season every year.

167: Bribie Island

Fiona: I live in a street with a notorious swooping magpie. I began feeding the magpie couple when I heard that they recognise people and remember if people have been nice to them or not. It has worked spectacularly. First, he stopped swooping me and would not swoop people in the street if I went out and talked to them. Now, he still does his look-out duties and they both shoo off larger birds but they don’t swoop humans at all anymore. I buy pet mince from the local butcher and give them a little in the morning. They also patrol my garden eating grasshoppers and other bugs, in return. I know you are not supposed to feed native animals, but this is a great solution as the magpies are very friendly now, sing beautifully and no humans are planning to get rid of them. Better than not feeding them and having someone try to kill them.

This particular magpie is a cunning little bugger who knows that there are a lot of heavy trucks using this roundabout after exiting the motorway. Magpie swooped at me in front of 299 Moggill Road. The roundabout in front of this place has a few magpie territories as I have been subject to their swoops in the previous 9 years I have lived here. This is a major problem area and I have witnessed many attacks also with one case an Indian lady being swooped 5 times at last visibility range count as I was driving past down along Coonan St.

Marina: A magpie that has taken up residence regularly swoops on people who are going to their mailbox, gardening or just in their front yard. If they are walking to the park in Red Gum Crescent, especially if they are on bikes, scooters or a mother pushing a pram they will definitely be swooped on. Red Gum Crescent does a big loop in Habitat estate and the magpie lives along the part of Red Gum Crescent that closest to the park and furtherest from Green Camp Road
My house is around the corner and down the road from this magpie's nest - not even remotely near it - and it swooped on my 4 year old as he road his scooter in our driveway. What I don't understand is that people say 'oh, but the magpie is just protecting its young,'
Well, what about the parents who are trying to protect their young from attacks by the magpie!!! Why don't we have a voice and why can't we attack this bird to protect our young!

My 7yo daughter was on her bike and I was running. My daughter went ahead and the Magpie swooped my daughter on her bike (left me alone). Once I was walking with her beside the bike the maggie stopped. Then my daughter went ahead again on her bike and the bird swooped again, twice. She felt a scratching (feet?) on her helmet and the wind from the wings. I wasn’t too worried as she was wearing her sunglasses and bike helmet. I yelled out to her to stop riding and get off the bike. The magpie went back to the tree.

It has even attacked the neighbours kids while they were under their back patio. The bird is getting more and more aggressive. It has cornered the young fellow next door on numerous occasions and continually swoops him. Yesterday it made contact with his head and a small cut was the result. The neighbours have attempted to befriend the bird by offering food, but this has not worked. The bird doesn't attack adults just kids. Anyone walking on that side of the footpath (or even on the other side) will get constantly swooped. I was in my front yard when my husband got swooped! They are vicious little things!
