The Iraqi defense was to create large walls of dirt to slow the coalition down. Look along the road and you will notice this wall encapsulates the base.
These long trenches are typical of the Iraq war doctrine for infantry.
Many SCUD sites are noticeable by the wdie and deep trenches left.
