I started cooking at the hotel after the 2nd cook hit all the waiters for bail money and disappeared in the night. the head chef, jon demopolous, allowed me to learn how to cook and have been doing it ever since. there were many nightrs we would end up at the ichi ban hotel and bar (on rt 42) in fallsburg to blow off steam and unwind. bobby the owner was from jersey city and would take troubled youths and give them an opportunity to see what could be out ther for them. there were some great times and memories in that era!!!...the avon lodge (which became Music Mountain in'80). The Avon Lodge had a comedy club called Bananas and I remember seeing the Bionic Chicken (Lenny Schultz) there. I mapquested the area and if you satelite image the area, you can still find the lake and the tennis court plus some buildings. Fire at Grandview Palace Condominiums
After the Tamarack Lodge in Ulster County burned down last weekend, firefighters in Sullivan County spent much of last night battling 20 to 30 foot high flames at the Grandview Palace Condo's in Fallsburg.
The fire broke out around 4 p.m. Saturday at what was originally known as the Browns Hotel. Firefighters said between 75 and 100 people were staying in the building at the time, which has nearly 400 units. Everyone escaped the building safely.
Its now called the Grandview Palace Condominiums. They had tight security, so I was not able to get in but it seems fully functionable

In front in big letters it's called " La Minette." It was obviously a big hotel, You can see where the rooms were in the back. The place is not in that bad condition though, a few broken windows. I read a little about history it was around during the heyday. It only seems to close in the early to mid 1980s. (Jerry Jacobs is the Son of the Owner Hyman Jaconbs
jjacobs@sas.upenn.edu)
It was origionally called Shady Nook in the late 1920's and was a farm.
Below are some comments from Bill Koenigsberg
The Delmar, because I worked there as a busboy and waiter in the early 1960s (I think summer of '61 or '62?). At that time, the owner was known to 'us' kitchen staff as Max Jacobs, and his wife was Claire. His sons were Howie and Jerry. I may even have some 'pay' stubs from the Delmar from that era, but please do not ask me where they might be, except that they are probably somewhere in my house. If memory serves, the main dining room at the Delmar at that time could hold maybe about 125 people maximum, if that. To me, that was not a large hotel; it all depends upon what large means.
What I found intriguing was your comment that The Delmar was called Shady Nook in the '20s. That may well be true, but it is also true that I worked as a busboy at the Shady Nook Country Club in Loch Sheldrake, in the early 1960s (summer of '62 or '63?). I did not notice the name of that hotel on your 'list'. I think I still have photographs of that hotel. Its dining room was certainly larger than that of the Delmar, holding maybe about 250 people. The owners at that time were Mrs. Brendel(sp?) and a Mr. Cohen (very deep voice). The head waiter's name was Howie. There may have been another co-owner, and I think that Howie was the son of Mrs. Brendel. I could probably dredge up more information, but it has been 50 years since those hectic fun-filled, hard-working, fond-memory days.

Michael Berman said the Grand Mountain Hotel was owned by the Steinhorn family and flourished during the mid to late fifties. The hotel was especially well known for having strip shows late on Saturday night. The windows to their casino would be draped and local teenagers used to try to sneak around the back to catch a glimpse of the strippers. Grand Mountain Hotel had an associated bungalow colony called Hillcrest, about 500 feet up the road and the bungalow residents used the hotel facilities. Needless to say, that was half a century ago. The hotel is still there as of 2009 and for the past few years has had an assortment of Russian owners. He is emailing me about the Sea Cliff House, and the Sand Lake Hotel
My Great Grandfather - Anton Westfall - bought the house and acreage from Johnny Darling.
Anton's son Joseph (my grandfather) and his wife Martha (Amback) (my Grandmother) owned and operated it for several years.
My Great Aunt Marie (one of my Grandfather's sisters) (Marie not Maria) owned and operated Sand Lake Hotel (not Sand Pond Hotel) (next door) and my Godfather and Godmother -- Uncle Ed & Aunt Catherine Baker (daughter of Tom and Margaret (Westfall--my grandfather's sister) Smith owned & operated Lake Rest Hotel in Shandelee.
Regards,
Paul Westfall

"Shein's" was located on the same road about 3/4 mile North of the Glory on the West side of the road. The satellite photo shows two outdoor swimming pools (not built when the hotel was operating in the 60's and 70's) in the area where the hotel was located.

I married a wonderful man from another hotel family, Stier's Hotel in Ferndale. When I mention our hotel at any time in the future it is Stier's. My story about Larry Best was at Stier's before I got there. He did continue to entertain and visit so I did get to know him well.. Stier's was on route 55(Swan Lake Road) corner of the Liberty-Loomis road. We owned all four corners. Now a kuchalen. The casino is still standing.

"It was owned by Ted and Cynthia Arenson and it was called Sunny Oaks Hotel. It was located in woodridge about a mile from the Avon Lodge towards town."

Gary S. Blatt Yes. I know how to get there visually, but don't remember the exact turns. I think you make the first right off of Rte. 17 when you get to Parksville and then another right. You will almost immediately pass The Paramount Hotel (if it is still there.) The Tanzville is about a mile or two on the same road beyond The Paramount

The Catskill Mountain House was a famous hotel near Palenville, New York in the Catskill Mountains overlooking the Hudson River Valley, built in 1824. In its prime, from the 1850s to the turn of the century, it was visited by three U.S. presidents.

It was actually The Union Hotel owned by Charles Kramer and somewhere along the line it was switched or just became common to call it Kramer Lake Hotel or Kramer’s Union House or Kramer’s Hotel Charles. If you look at the Lake to your east Lenape Lake. You will see that it is no longer a lake. Owned by Charles (“Charlie” or “Old Man”) Kramer
The lady whose email is below has indicated that there used to be a dam that broke in 2005, leaving the lake empty.

The Stevensville Hotel a.k.a. the Swan Lake Hotel, not to be confused with the Swan Lake Hotel across the lake. Is still up. It's a huge structure, and seems to be used by religous Jews, or atleast a section of it. It's a really big eyesore cause it's in the middle of everything. It maybe destroyed by the time you read this.

http://www.catskillarchive.com/laurel/ a good website -> Not exactly a Borscht belt Hotel but a very important part of Catskill history built at the head of Kaaterskill Falls (literally). All that exists is the foundation, but the waterfalls are still there. This place almost seems like it should be fenced off, to some it could be considered very dangerious. You can literally stand on the falls. Walking around I saw the foundation, pipes, rock walls, etc. Everything to indicate a hotel was there. What was really cool was there was graffiti there from the 1800's in the rocks. This is real fun place to visit.

Here is a description of where "The Glory" was located. Look on Google Maps for "Woodridge, NY". You will see the intersection of The Glen Wild Rd. and Cauthers Ln. (Actually these two roads intersect twice - sort of in a pointed oval.) The Glory was located just North of the more Northern most intersection on the East side of the road. If you switch to Satellite view, several remaining buildings can be seen, including, very conspicuously, the outdoor swimming pool. The most Northern field in the complex shows 4 white bungalows on the right with a campground brown house and some orange building which I have no idea is.

One little section exists here of a building, looks like it was cut in half. It's in the middle of the woods and unless you were looking for it you would never find it. The only structure that still exists is half the hotel. You can see that the grass has fully overtaken the road leading up to the hotel. There is a'lot of debris from the old buildings scattered all over the property. I took a quick look inside the locker room through a window that was not bordered up and it's look like massage water damage and junk pilled up.
