Borscht Belt Hotels in the Catskills

Leer descripción ↓↓ Ver el mapa

(U will see MORE hotels appear if you hit Next at the bottom) Over many trips to the Borscht Belt region of the Catskills, which between the late 1800’s mid-1900 was the largest, richest & densely populated area of hotels in the world, I was able to locate many. Most no longer existed & were just empty lots, 90% were in total shambles. For many I got pics. I used GPS, records, W of mouth & verified all locations. Unless stated, I’m 100% sure that every location is accurate & the marker is on the location. If not 100% accurate then the hotel is w/in walking distance. I’m missing many, some are impossible to find, w/ fires or little known info. most are just a foundation or pool. It’s a work in progress. If U know of any I am missing pls. email me, as I locate more I will add it, (as w/ the internet pictures don’t continue 2 work, links expire. etc. if U see that pls. let me know. Origionally called the Hotel Levbourne, the name was changed in the 1950's it was run by Carrie Kumito.  In around 1973-74 it was called Cinematic Circus and had live concerts.

As you approach this place you see a brown house that looks like it was a Mansion/hotel at one time. It stands all by itself, right next to it is a big sign that says "Funland" maybe at one time it was something but now is just a large building, that looks likes a warehouse. I am pretty sure there was some sort of connection with that house and the property of Funland

7: Avon Lodge

I am 85% sure this was the location. This is where Sid Ceaser started his comedy routine

"i remember when music mountain( avon lodge) would have concerts I was able to listen to them and hearing some amazing bands. i... spent time at other bungalow colonies in the summers from 1964 and on, but got my first hotel job in 1979 at this hotel. I started cooking at the hotel after the 2nd cook hit all the waiters for bail money and disappeared in the night. the head chef, jon demopolous, allowed me to learn how to cook and have been doing it ever since. there were many nightrs we would end up at the ichi ban hotel and bar (on rt 42) in fallsburg to blow off steam and unwind. bobby the owner was from jersey city and would take troubled youths and give them an opportunity to see what could be out ther for them. there were some great times and memories in that era!!!...the avon lodge (which became Music Mountain in'80). The Avon Lodge had a comedy club called Bananas and I remember seeing the Bionic Chicken (Lenny Schultz) there. I mapquested the area and if you satelite image the area, you can still find the lake and the tennis court plus some buildings. The road now has a Russian name and I do not know if the buikdings are the originals."

Thanks,
Jeffrey Ort

Farrel Bernstein --> ...the Gayety Burlesque was located at the old Blue Eagel Hotell's casino which was app 200 yds past the Nemerson, right befor the little bridge at Grosegolds Bungalows on the way to Kan Achers Bungalows, and the Pines Hotel...It had been shut down for many yrs, then became a religious hotel, after that closed the burlesk took the only building still in decent shape which was across from the main bldgs.

alice birney --->Mar 29th 2010

The Blue Eagle was already in its last years when we walked down there as children in the 1940s. It was down the hill from the Nemerson, a major hotel. I believe the Blue Eagle had its heyday in the 1930s and was named for socialist-related concepts.

Jan Teitelbaum: 11/1/2011 -> Blue Eagle is the Hotel that my mother met my father . He was a musician at the hotel . When I was a kid I used to sit on the white fence with my girl friend. There was a Burlesque House in the old playhouse . Farrel and I used to look through the window, and watch the show. It burned down one summer and it was never replaced. The Blue Eagle was 500 feet fromthe Pines Hotel in one direction and 500 feet from the Nemerson Hotel in the other direction in South Fallsburg . In between was my cousins Bungalo colony Grossgolds. Take Laurel ave from South Fallsburg turn onto Park PL about 500 feet and theres a brook you make a Left  and 250 feet up there it is Blue Eagle theres an Apartment complex built on the pool

Update: 04/15/2012

Fire at Grandview Palace Condominiums

After the Tamarack Lodge in Ulster County burned down last weekend, firefighters in Sullivan County spent much of last night battling 20 to 30 foot high flames at the Grandview Palace Condo's in Fallsburg.

The fire broke out around 4 p.m. Saturday at what was originally known as the Browns Hotel. Firefighters said between 75 and 100 people were staying in the building at the time, which has nearly 400 units. Everyone escaped the building safely.

Now its Shree Muktananda Ashram. It's in really good condition.  It's really tight security, I was watched the entire time, and then was stopped by 3 people.  Seems very cultish and the ppl. there were wacky.  Half of he structure has been rebuild.  The new structure was added on to the origional structure.  The new structure looks clean and bright white, then the origional structure looks old.  Don't even waste your time going there, unless you sneak in, you will not be allowed in.

In front in big letters it's called " La Minette." It was obviously a big hotel, You can see where the rooms were in the back. The place is not in that bad condition though, a few broken windows. I read a little about history it was around during the heyday. It only seems to close in the early to mid 1980s. (Jerry Jacobs is the Son of the Owner Hyman Jaconbs jjacobs@sas.upenn.edu)
It was origionally called Shady Nook in the late 1920's and was a farm.

The Delmar, because I worked there as a busboy and waiter in the early 1960s (I think summer of '61 or '62?). At that time, the owner was known to 'us' kitchen staff as Max Jacobs, and his wife was Claire. His sons were Howie and Jerry. I may even have some 'pay' stubs from the Delmar from that era, but please do not ask me where they might be, except that they are probably somewhere in my house. If memory serves, the main dining room at the Delmar at that time could hold maybe about 125 people maximum, if that. To me, that was not a large hotel; it all depends upon what large means.

What I found intriguing was your comment that The Delmar was called Shady Nook in the '20s. That may well be true, but it is also true that I worked as a busboy at the Shady Nook Country Club in Loch Sheldrake, in the early 1960s (summer of '62 or '63?). I did not notice the name of that hotel on your 'list'. I think I still have photographs of that hotel. Its dining room was certainly larger than that of the Delmar, holding maybe about 250 people. The owners at that time were Mrs. Brendel(sp?) and a Mr. Cohen (very deep voice). The head waiter's name was Howie. There may have been another co-owner, and I think that Howie was the son of Mrs. Brendel. I could probably dredge up more information, but it has been 50 years since those hectic fun-filled, hard-working, fond-memory days.

Phil Brown spoke about this place. He said that he passed it one year and it was in shambles and the next year he saw it was in amazing condition.

Michael Berman said the Grand Mountain Hotel was owned by the Steinhorn family and flourished during the mid to late fifties. The hotel was especially well known for having strip shows late on Saturday night. The windows to their casino would be draped and local teenagers used to try to sneak around the back to catch a glimpse of the strippers. Grand Mountain Hotel had an associated bungalow colony called Hillcrest, about 500 feet up the road and the bungalow residents used the hotel facilities. Needless to say, that was half a century ago. The hotel is still there as of 2009 and for the past few years has had an assortment of Russian owners. It had been vacant for a great while but fortunately the major buildings and pool are still intact.

"The Hotel Gradus was located next door to the Mayfair. With your back to Kiamesha Lake, on the left was the Mayfair, then came the Hotel Gradus and next to the Hotel Gradus was the Fairmont Hotel. By the late 60's early 70's we were the only hotel left on the block. My parents sold the property to the Chasidim and they knocked down all of the buildings and created a Summer Camp. The Gradus and the Mayfair were separated by an old rock fence that dated back to revolutionary times. We also had a view of the Concord, which I thought of as the City and a dock on Kiamesha Lake. Our hotel was directly across the street from the Reynolds food distribution center."

Here is a story from http://www.vosizneias.com/  Sullivan County, Woodridge, NY - Firefighters from Sullivan and Ulster counties were all on the scene this morning for a large 3rd Alarm fire that destroyed the main building and several bungalows at a Orthodox Jewish camp.

The fire began early in the morning at 114 Lakehouse Road and Rosemond Road, the former Lakehouse Hotel, off Dairyland and Clearmont Roads between Woodridge and Mountaindale.

The blaze took down a 20,000-square-foot wood frame commercial structure and several smaller bungalows at this seasonal camp that was unoccupied. No injuries were reported.

The fire is under investigation.

Fire departments from Woodridge, Mountain-Dale and Woodburn responded again late in the afternoon to a 2nd Alarm, when the fire re-kindled. [VIN]

I didn't get too many pictures because I was escorted out by a security guard. This place is still open. I walked around the Hotel and almost never saw even one guest or worker. The place is huge, and has tons of hidden underground passages. Its was like a big maze. You can tell they did some renovations, however the parts that were not renovated smelled like a musk. The pool and gym were in excellent condition, the ski lodge and out door ice skating rink looked like it had not been touch in 50 years.

An update as of 11/09/2009 -> I was just there to take some more pictures and it’s closed.  I security guard only allow me to pass the gate to do a U-turn, then closed the gate.  FYI, the Fallsview, which is right next to the Nevele, is doing really well, had tons of convention busses there.

I visited this hotel on a rainy day, I knew it was already destroyed, however parts of the hotel were incorporated into a new hotel called "The Owls Nest." It closed and almost looked abandoned to me, but it was in o.k. condition, and was in the middle of no where.

Update (12/2012) O.K. so I was just at this property and I am not sure if it was called the Cherry Hill Hotel or the Echo (The hotel that was directly across the street).  However whatever it's name was it was in pretty good condition and being used as a summer camp.  Here ar some pictues

169: The Laurel House 1852 - 1967

Click for http://www.catskillarchive.com/laurel/ a good website -> Not exactly a Borscht belt Hotel but a very important part of Catskill history built at the head of Kaaterskill Falls (literally).  All that exists is the foundation, but the waterfalls are still there.  This place almost seems like it should be fenced off, to some it could be considered very dangerious.  You can literally stand on the falls.  Walking around I saw the foundation, pipes, rock walls, etc. Everything to indicate a hotel was there.  What was really cool was there was graffiti there from the 1800's in the rocks.  This is real fun place to visit.

I was told that this hotel was located here, however it was on Rt. 42, across the street from Kiamesha Lake and had a view of the Concord Hotel. So this is my best assumption as to where it was located.  However, I am only 65% sure it was on this exact spot.

Thanks,

177: The Glory Hotel

Here is a description of where "The Glory" was located.  Look on Google Maps for "Woodridge, NY".  You will see the intersection of The Glen Wild Rd. and Cauthers Ln. (Actually these two roads intersect twice - sort of in a pointed oval.)  The Glory was located just North of the more Northern most intersection on the East side of the road.  If you switch to Satellite view, several remaining buildings can be seen, including, very conspicuously, the outdoor swimming pool.  The most Northern field in the complex shows 4 white bungalows on the right with a campground brown house and some orange building which I have no idea is.

This place was locked down hardcore.  The security was good. and I was not able to get inside. It didn't look like it was in horrible condition, but it was borded up and owned by an orthodox group, thats planning on doing something with it.

One little section exists here of a building, looks like it was cut in half.  It's in the middle of the woods and unless you were looking for it you would never find it.  The only structure that still exists is half the hotel.  You can see that the grass has fully overtaken the road leading up to the hotel. There is a'lot of debris from the old buildings scattered all over the property.  I took a quick look inside the locker room through a window that was not bordered up and it's look like massage water damage and junk pilled up.

The Inn no longer exist. The only remaining buildings are the old office referred to as the Hut and a few
other smaller buildings. Yama Farms main house and grounds were sold and reopened as a Jewish
Country Club around 1945. It was sold a few more times and closed around 1959. Due to neglect and
then condemed it was burned down in 1967 by the Napanoch Fire Dept
