4: Sydney - Botany Bay - South of Dolls - Experienced Kiters Only

For experienced kiters only.

The beachfront near the bridge is directly on shore in a southerly and there is a fair bit of boating traffic. At high tide launching can be sketchy (because there isn't enough beach).

It's not one to encourage learners to visit.
The windsurfers use it as well.

The south eastern part of the map is mangroves and oyster leases. Only suitable in SW. Some say it's "Very dangerous and unsuitable in almost all winds".

A good spot but only when the conditions are perfect. It is always incredibly gusty, at high tide the beach is about 3m wide, pine trees everywhere, and some hidden but nasty oyster covered rocks just past the sandbank (as Jordan will go on and on about)

Please be careful launching and landing. The road (with moving cars) is right by the beach!

But yes the water is very flat!

8: Sydney - North - North Narrabeen -- NO KITE ZONE

No Kite Zone

This is a seriously territorial surf spot.

Warning: In a NE wind the headland can block the wind and your kite may drop and you could be washed into the surf zone.

In a SE wind, it'll be choppy. This is one of the best surf breaks in Sydney and will ALWAYS be crowded with surfers, so stay clear and stay out of trouble. Despite the temptation of some nice waves here this is a "Surfer's Only" zone. Stay to the south of here and you'll be fine.

The only POSSIBLE exception is in a SE wind if there are NO surfers in the water at all. Don't say you haven't been warned... (author: RGS)

Sydney Harbour - No Kiting Zone

Sydney Harbour is off limits to all forms of kite flying and kite surfing.

Do not kite anywhere inside of sydney harbour -- you may incur heavy fines from nsw waterways police and potentially have your gear confiscated.

Waterways police are serious and do not mess around with warnings.

Sydney Harbour has a lot of boat traffic, which include a lot of sailing boats, ferries and large commerical tankers.

15: Sydney - East - Bondi - No Kiting Zone

Bondi Beach comes under the Waverly city council by-law prohibiting the flying of all kites with 2 lines or more.

NSWKBA also states that this beach is unsuitable for kitesurfing due to many dangers. Members found kiting at bondi are in breach of the kiting code set out by NSWKBA/AKSA and this will void your liability insurance.

Lifeguards will notify water police, you may be arrested and your gear confiscated. This is not a joke.

Early 2012 - there was an incident (search forums for "Bondi Idiot") where a kiter disobeyed the lifeguards instructions, and the police were called. This is embarrassing to the kiting community, and no way to treat the lifeguards who do a fantastic job on our beaches. Please don't be the next Bondi Idiot. Thanks.

If you are here on holiday from overseas please respect the local rules. Plus if you are on holiday then you probably have loads of time to travel to other much nicer and safer beaches to kite. Please support us by keeping up a good name for kiting in the community. Thanks.

Please don't launch and land your kites here.

The area close to the oil wharf and westwards has little beach and is generally full of swimmers, it could extend westwards maybe one more groin.

Please avoid launching, landing and kiting here. The area to the west is much better.

Thanks. (James)

24: FAR NORTH - BYRON BAY - NO KITE ZONE 1

Restricted zone. Due to the number of swimmers, surfers and other water users in this area, Byron Bay Council (with NSWKBA's support) has established restricted kiting zones. Kiting is prohibited in the area from Main Beach to Clarke's Beach unless there are no swimmers, surfers or other water users present. Please take care not to kite in this area; take extra care in launching from the designated launch areas and kite only in the areas not restricted, as shown on this map. Council is currently reviewing its position (July 2012) and may extend the restricted zones to additional areas if it determines there are potential risks to other beach users. Kite with care and ensure that the beach is safe for all. Thank you. NSWKBA Committee.

Please also take extra care to avoid any and all designated swimming zones where swimming flags are present. (60m either side of flags and 500m beyond the flags from the beach)

31: Sydney - Botany Bay - First Car Park (Solander St)

Great flat water location.

Long launching area but be careful of crowds of beachgoers, swimmers and other kiters.

Watch out for the rock groins, the swimming pool (slightly further south), and for the trees, shrubs and the fence.

This spot is best kited in a NE (summer seabreeze) wind due to the airport being north of this location.

Can be difficult to get off the beach in a straight-offshore Easterly (but these aren't too common).

Can work in S and SE winds, but please do not kite north of President Avenue. Water Police can issue you with a $500 fine.

Please don't self-launch and self-land when there are other kiters at this beach. Local kiters are more than happy to help you launch and land your kite. There are often many beachgoers at this beach.

Access by Public Transport: Catch the train to Rockdale station and then catch the 478 bus. Or you can catch the 303 bus from the City. Hop out at this beach.

Please remember: Even though this is marked in Green, accidents can happen. There are rock groins, people, trees etc. to be careful about.

32: Sydney - Botany Bay - Hollywoods

Good flat water kiting. can get choppy when the tide is running. Watch out for rock groins down wind and the swimming area to the south.

See First Car Park entry too - for more information.

Please remember: Even though this is marked in Green, accidents can happen. There are rock groins, concrete walls, people, trees etc. to be careful about.

33: Sydney - South - Boat Harbour

One of the few locations to kite in SW wind, can be good flat water inside the reef.

Warning: However watch out for currents, the rocks and waves on the reef.

Access via Capt Cook Drive, entry to the park is ~$25 (2012) You can take any vehicle to the carpark inside the park (and then walk 200m to the beach) or if you have a 4x4 you can drive onto the beach :)

Don't leave your lines out on the beach or they may get run over.

Please remember: Even though this is marked in Green, accidents can happen. There are rocks (reef) and waves further out to be careful about.

Más sobre Sydney - South - Boat Harbour

34: Sydney - North - Palm Beach

NE to ESE wind. A good wave spot and usually windier than the rest of the Northern Beaches. There isn't a lot of room for learning however. If you stay away from the flags at the north end of the beach there is some space and fewer people.  When the wind is more in the N-NNE kiting here is very fickle due to the headland which creates gusty conditions.

Be VERY careful of the surf flags and stay clear of all other beach users!  VERY crowded beach in summer.

Más sobre Sydney - North - Palm Beach

35: Sydney - North - South Palm Beach - Stay Clear

Sun-baking beach, always crowded in summer and flagged for swimming. Stay clear and plenty of way to the North where the wind is better and it's far less crowded.

Más sobre Sydney - North - South Palm Beach - Stay Clear

38: Sydney - North - Narrabeen

Works in SE - NNE wind but can get gusty the more north it gets.

Narrabeen has a good launch and landing area due to the size of the beach and lack of people outside the swimming zones.

Warning: There is a Large shore break at the beach, it has claimed many kites. Judge the conditions that you are comfortable in and watch the downwind current running down the beach.

As with other locations, stay clear of other beach users and practice here only if there is at least 50m of unoccupied beach upwind and downwind of you.

Más sobre Sydney - North - Narrabeen

39: Sydney - North - Long Reef

Intermediate to Expert Kiters.

Good location for NE - SSW.

Has a large area to launch and land your kite.

Warnings: Gusty in NE and SSW. There can be massively large waves and it can get crowded.  Not good in SW - as the wind comes over the headland and it's very bumpy and gusty. In SE it's dead onshore - and so if the waves are big, it can make it difficult to get out to the back.

I've marked this as expert because the waves can be huge. Check seabreeze to see what the expected swell size will be. It's a great spot!

Stay clear of surfers as much as is practical. Please do not kite through groups of surfers.

Surf schools often operate at the entrance of the Lagoon and swimming flags are set up just N of the Lagoon.  DO NOT kite through the surf schools and always maintain proper distance off of surfers and flags. Lifeguards have been instructed to fine or confiscate gear from anyone who disobeys these regulations. Speak to the locals to learn more about currents and waves.

Do not practice kiting here unless the beach is uncrowded.

Please do not teach your mates to kite here if the beach is crowded with sunbakers and swimmers.

41: Sydney - North - Dee Why

Best in an E to ENE but can handle an SSE as well. Better to launch at next location to the N at Dee Why Lagoon entrance.  DO NOT kite here in a westerlie (yes, people do) If you drop your kite it could be bye bye.

Más sobre Sydney - North - Dee Why

42: Sydney - Botany Bay - Yarra Bay

Possible in a sou'wester, but can be extremely gusty and therefore potentially dangerous.

Más sobre Sydney - Botany Bay - Yarra Bay

43: Sydney - Botany Bay - Dolls Point

Flat water kiting.

Gets busy when its windy.

Warning: Potential for serious accidents and injury from rock walls, power lines, cars, houses, large trees and other nearby hard objects. Launch and get in the water immediately and stay away from the beach once you are out.

Warning: Too many kites have ended up in the trees here. Try to avoid self-launching and self-landing - rather ask other kiters to help you.

The beach can get very busy with sunbakers in summer. Stay away from the beach.

Don't jump near the shore. Don't jump near the shore. Don't jump near the shore. (is this message getting through?)

Warning: The tide can be very strong here, so if the wind is 15 knots, but the tide current up the river is 5 knots you can suddenly find yourself out in deep water with only 10 knots of relative wind. If you are new to the area chat to the locals before you head out. A good number of boards have been lost in this current too.

See NSWKBA Code of Conduct before kiting.

All that said though - it's a great spot. Can be kiting in NE, SE, S, and SW.
(Gusty in southerlies)

Más sobre Sydney - Botany Bay - Dolls Point

44: Sydney - Botany Bay - Kurnell

Great flat water kitesurfing. Arguably the windiest place in Sydney.

Good in NE or NW wind.

Warning: Watch out for rock groins and follow the locals with the rules of getting in and out.
Take extreme care: Many accidents have happened here. Beach is tiny and there is no room for mistakes.
Warning: There are also power lines just south of the beach (above the parked cars). Be very careful of these in NE.

Sometimes there are sea urchins and oyster shells on the bottom to the E in the shallows so boots can be a good idea.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Do not kite here if a southerly change is in the forecast -- you could end up on the sydney airport runways and if you survive, next stop could be jail!

Más sobre Sydney - Botany Bay - Kurnell

45: Sydney - South - Wanda

Good location for S, SE, NE can work here and is cross shore.

Warning: Waves can get big. Watch out for surfers and beachgoers.

Lots of people on the beach in summer. Surfers can be aggressive if you fail to yield right of way.

Más sobre Sydney - South - Wanda

46: Sydney - North - Palm Beach Pittwater

Only kiteable in a straight and steady NW wind that is not too gusty. (which almost NEVER happens) This spot is for experienced kiters ONLY and can be very dangerous. The E side of the beach has a wire fence which has claimed a few kiters; the S end has no beach, electrical wires as well as various obstacles in the grass and car park. The west side is covered in trees and rocks. Heavy boat traffic in summer. A seaplane takes off and lands at the pier to the south regularly and there is no wind towards the other side of the river. OK for windsurfers in the right conditions but not a good kite spot. Please choose other locations or kite with extreme care.

Más sobre Sydney - North - Palm Beach Pittwater

47: Sydney - North - Newport Reef

Advanced Kiters Only.

This spot can produce some big waves in a south swell and is located over shallow rocks. Best suited to S and SE winds. Very tricky launching. Not recommended for lone kiting. Take care. Super gusty launch area.

Más sobre Sydney - North - Newport Reef

48: Sydney - North - Mona Vale

There will be rare instances when you can kite here but it's not worth it. There will always be places that are better. Surrounding terrain is irregular and the wind will be gusty and there are few safe launching/landing areas. Very crowded in summer. ESE to E wind only.

Más sobre Sydney - North - Mona Vale

49: Sydney - North - Fishermans

Intermediate to Advanced kiters. N to ESE. Best in NE.

NOTE: Do not use this beach to learn kite flying.

Warning: The beach area is small and regularly populated with sunbakers. Tall trees line the shore only a few metres from the water and have digested more than a few kites over the years. There are underwater reefs here, so please be very careful. Have a chat with the locals.

Stay away from the grounds of the golf club. The water is littered with rocks for 75m out from the beach. As the tide drops you find them more and more of an issue.

Respect people on the small launching beach.

Repeat: Do not use this beach to learn kite flying.

Fishermans

Another launch location for more Easterly winds. Parking requires permit or ticket.

Not a beach to learn kite flying due the extremely small beach area.

Good flat (read choppy) spot for a NE. Watch out for trees and rocks at low tide. Have a chat with the locals as to where the reefs are.

Respect people on the small launching beach.

Great waves and excellent sailing but not without it's hazards, including regular sightings of VERY large sharks, (e.g., 5m white pointer in 2010)  rocks, reef, and it's a long way to the beach if something breaks. (Author: RGS)

52: Sydney - North - Butterbox

For experienced kiters only.

Super flat offshore wind in a N - NE wind.

Your only bailout option is to body drag to Dee Why if the wind dies or you lose your board. If you lose your board it will likely end up on Shelley Beach (near Manly) the next morning. (Not kidding) If you can't relaunch your kite, you'll end up on Dee Why Headland. (See entry to the south) Unless the wind is 20+ knots NE, the only practical way here is to kite around the headland from S Narrabeen. Don't forget, you have to get back afterwards which can require very long tacks out to sea.

If you kite here in a southerly and you lose your board it will wash up in the rocks and you probably won't see it again. Drop your kite here and it may come home as a spaghetti dinner. Ignore at your peril...

If you plan to kite here, be sure to take a mobile phone in a waterproof case with you in case you get into strife.

On a good southerly swell there will be loads of surfers in the water. DO NOT cut through the pack of surfers. Kite the shoulders and stay out of the surf lineup.

Experts only

Three offshore reef breaks which break when the surf is 6ft+ and will hold any size.

Waves of up to 10m are not uncommon here on a big south swell but it is one of the most dangerous places on the East Coast of Australia.

There is a massive amount of water moving around, the waves break in a number of different places and if you get caught inside you could be in serious trouble. It looks three times bigger when you are near the waves than it does from the shore. This is a true "EXPERTS-ONLY" spot and not a place you want to get into trouble. Oh, did I mention there are frequent sighting of very large sharks here? (Author Robbo)

54: Sydney - North - Dee Why Lagoon

Dee Why Lagoon - Experts only

Warning: Dee Why Lagoon is not a place for beginners!

Despite its inviting flat water. There are a multitude of dangers here, including: turbulent wind from terrain obstruction from three sides, a large (20m) submerged wire cage on north side, submerged rocks, pipes, water depth measurement posts, fences, trees and storm drain debris on northwest shore, polluted water, thick algae. Water depth along the N end past the sand is usually head high+ right up to the trees. Do not kite in the lagoon unless you are a competent, skilled kiter. And under no conditions should you kite beyond the first point on the south end. "Friends of Dee Why Lagoon" (an environmental volunteer group) have thus far not complained about kiting occurring in the E end however, kiting activity in the W end will no doubt change that.

There are better ways to die... Just be warned--if you kite at Long Reef/Butterbox in a nor'easter, this is where you could end up! (author: Robbo).

You can kite here--but only in a SSE to E wind and for expert kiters only.

Warnings: Conditions are not ideal due to surrounding terrain with headlands and hills, the wind it unpredictable. There are also some power lines in the middle just behind the beach.

Best to go to Long Reef (next beach to the North). Beach too crowded for kiting in summer under any conditions. (author: RGS)

57: Sydney - North - Manly

Whilst you may sometimes see people kitesurfing at Manly, the NSWKBA strongly recommends against it.

Kiting is prohibited AT ALL TIMES at Shelly Beach to the south of Manly.

NOTE: There is a 100% ban on kiting at any time when the surf flags are up. (Usually before 6pm in summer) If you see surf flags up anywhere on Manly beach, kiting is strictly prohibited.

Because of the number of surfers and swimmers in the water at Manly on most days NSWKBA strongly discourages kiting at Manly.

Like Bondi, Manly is way too busy and quite small with large trees all along the beach front. There are many people, vollyball players and surfers all on the beach and in the water.

On a big day the Queenscliff Bombora will be breaking 150m offshore. If you get into trouble there you may become a newspaper story the next day.

If you kite at Manly at any time, you do so at your own risk and will be subject to the direction of lifeguards or NSW water police.

Effective January 2012, kitesurfing is NOT recommended at Maroubra and is prohibited at all times when the flags are up.

59: Sydney - Botany Bay - South of Dolls

60: Sydney - Botany Bay - Towra

Experienced Kiters Only

There are currently moves afoot by NSW Maritime to ban kiting at Towra Reserve. Check with locals before venturing here on current status.

One of the nicest flat water locations, only recommended in a steady NE that is not likely to fade. Access is via boat or kite only so if the wind drops you are walking--a LONG way. (20km!) You need to be able to kite upwind and stay upwind to get back to Dolls Point from here and to benefit from this spot. Access out in an emergency is to walk south to Capt Cook Drive.

61: Sydney - South - Voodoos

Powerful waves behind the reef. Very sucky and often will dredge dry on the reef. Experts only. And if you are kiting here on a SW, be aware if you get blown past the reef, it's a long way to anywhere...

65: ILLAWARRA - JERVIS BAY - Huskinsson/Vincentia

Perfect flat water conditions for summer. When it is sunny in summer the wind will almost certainly be NE and WINDY.  Perfect location for beginners and advanced riders. Beginners we wary of turning up too late in the day as the wind can get VERY strong on a hot day.  Watch out for swimmers towards the north end of this beach at the river and the lagoon. Gets busy in holiday periods

Más sobre ILLAWARRA - JERVIS BAY - Huskinsson/Vincentia

66: ILLAWARRA - GERROA - Seven Mile Beach

A great spot for downwinders and works in NE - S winds. Summer generally gets windy from the NE but there are strong currents and a killer shore break. Learning is possible here due to the immense space on the beach. North side very gusty in NE. There have been a number of car break-ins at the secluded car parks so take all gear with you. Lots of sharks in the vicinity.

67: CENTRAL COST - Picnic Point

Great FLAT water location for all Westerly wind conditions. Is VERY shallow at low tide with a soft bottom, take care or launching on the wet grass as it gets slippy when wet. Foot protection is also a good idea due to 'things' on the bottom. Wind here in winter gets very gusty so take care.

83: HAWKS NESTS - Lemmontree

With the aid of a 4x4 and a permit from the local council you can get your 4x4 up here for some great kiting.

This beach handles a lot of wind directions from NE to SSW.

Watch out for some big waves at the north end around the rocky headland. You are a long way from help so don't kite alone. A great spot for a NE downwinder and you'll get a perfect cross shore wind angle somewhere on the way down.

Don't park your 4x4 too close to the water and watch out for the high tide, (and sharks)

Squiddies is a strange spot located in a caravan park. DO NOT PARK ON THE GRASS OR THE ROAD. Please park in the park visitors spots on the way in. You can drive round and dump your gear though.

It is kitable in NW-W and you'll find a lot of the locals out there. very flat water with a channel that can affect you.

A muddy bottom with lots of rubbish so boots can be advisable.

Launching is a bit awkward between trees so care must be taken as it will be gusty.

Take care..
