Very large mulberry tree just north of the rotunda in Woodham park - Fruit ripens throughout February. Pick the dark purple ones. Be prepared to get pink stains on your hands! If making jam get some less ripe fruit as well as this will help the jam to set (has higher pectin content).

Several large pear trees at Middleton Road entrance to the park. Heavy croppers, but if others have been there before you the only fruit will be up pretty high. Not all that great for eating, but fine for stewing and bottling. Fruit in late autumn.

Many pear trees in the garden around Riccarton House. The massive French Duvauchelle pear tree drops a thick carpet of tiny pears in autumn, but get in early before the wasps begin to feed off the rotting fruit and the area is fenced off.

FABULOUS community garden, but get involved, don't be a stealer. Garden working bees are on Friday afternoons from 2-5pm, turn up when you::text like for as long as you::text like and you'll be sent home with some fresh organic yummies. Although the garden is on University grounds, it is open to the public to visit and participate. A bit difficult to find though - follow the walking track off Ilam Road near the driveway to the science/engineering carpark (the northernmost entrance on Ilam Rd), go across the bridge to the preschool, turn right and keep following the winding path by the stream until you come to the community garden on your left (north).

Growing wild and abundant in the reserve here. Go for a wander on the river bank and you can smell the onion smell in the air. Look for the bladed leaves growing about a foot tall in large patches. Smell them to confirm what they are - it's unmistakable. If you pull them out you will see an onion-looking bulb at the end but the whole plant is edible.

There are many Elderflowers that overhang this park, particularly on the east side. These flower in the second half of November and are perfect to making elderflower cordial/champagne/other elderflower infused dishes. Some flowers may be quite high up, consider bringing a chair or something.

Pretty sure this is a type of Hawthorn from the leaf shape and the crown on the end of the berry. Plenty of berries (end of Jan) which can apparently be used for conserves or wine although not for eating raw. There is a similar tree just back from the railway line on Toppings Rd but I didnt stop to investigate so haven't added a placemarker. This position is approximate.

The red fruits have a large stone surrounded by a creamy-white flesh which is very slightly sweet, but frequently kicks in with a nasty after-taste. The berries can be used in conserves, and a haw berry wine is possible.

Grows all along the river's edge here. Only pick the light green tips in summer. Used in salads, don't take too much though as this is a sensitive area. It's a curious taste that is worth a try but you may not want too much without washing it - it is the heathcote after all!

Huge amounts of fragrant fennel, on the inland side of this boardwalk.
Use the feather-like fronds as a herb similar to dill, with an anise/licorice aroma, its good with fish.
Alternatively, slice up the stems and use as you would use fennel bulbs from the markets. Fennel bulbs are just fat stalks, although these thin, wild stalks have a stronger flavour.

When they took down the many pine trees here in winter 2012 they mulched the smaller branches and the area is covered with at least half a metre of pine mulch. Most is now (Feb 13) covered with vegetation but still worth collecting bags of it if you need it for the garden paths etc. Also on the other side of Bridge St where they chopped the trees down

Elderflower Trees, great for making elderflower cordial... the most refreshing of summer drinks. Flowers usually bloom late November early December.
Recipe:
90 large elderflower umbels (heads)
5.40kg of sugar
6 lemons - sliced
180gms citric acid
3 liters boiling water
Put the elderflowers, sugar, lemons and citric acid in a large heatproof bowl and stir in the water to dissolve the sugar.
Cover and leave in a cool place for four days, stirring occasionally.
Strain through a muslin bag (or wine strainer bag) and pour in to clean bottles and seal.
This cordial is ready to drink and stores well.
