2013 Wisconsin Shorebirding Locations

Leer descripción ↓↓ Ver el mapa

This map was created to direct birdwatchers to areas being managed for migratory shorebirds by Wisconsin DNR and other conservation partners in 2013 (blue markers). We've also included other sites to look for shorebirds (red markers). Most shorebird management involves planned water level manipulations to expose mud flats. These mud flats provide foraging habitat during the late summer when the caloric needs are high for migrating shorebirds. Funding for this habitat work is usually provided by hunter license dollars, excise taxes on hunting and shooting equipment, through the state waterfowl stamp, and private funds. Birders are encouraged to purchase their own waterfowl stamp to fund important projects for shorebirds and other non-game wetland birds on state lands. Birders are also encouraged to submit their sightings to Wisconsin eBird (www.ebird.org/WI) so that we can track migratory shorebird populations and assess the value of these management activities.

0: Buffalo Lake, Marquette Co.

A drawdown of the 2,210 acre Buffalo Lake began in 2012 for dam repairs. The lake is being drawn down again in 2013. Conditions throughout the migration season will depend on rainfall, but as of Aug 27 many shorebirds were present. In fact, nearly 2000 shorebirds were reported here on that date!

Best viewing was from the boat landing on the south end of the causeway at Packwaukee on Freedom Street. No traffic and you can actually park sideways to the lake and view with a scope from the car. Otherwise, great viewing was on Chestnut (which is County D) with parking on the east side only.

1: Winding Creek Fish Rearing Station

Winding Creek is a DNR Fisheries property used to rear fish for stocking. After young fish have been removed for stocking, the impoundment is drawn down. Reports from mid-July indicated the presence of 8 shorebird species using the site, including various species of sandpipers.

Winding Creek Rearing Station is 2.6 miles southeast of Colby in Marathon County. From State Hwy 13, take County Hwy N east for 2 miles, then south on Maple Road for 1 mile, then east on Blueberry Road for 1/2 mile.

2: Seagull Bar State Natural Area

From the junction of Ogden Street and Leonard Street in the southeastern corner of the City of Marinette, follow Leonard Street east and south about 0.5 miles to Red Arrow Park along Lake Michigan. Parking is available in Red Arrow Park, a City of Marinette public use area. Walk southeast into the natural area. This property naturally provides shorebird and marsh bird viewing opportunities.

3: Oconto Marsh State Wildlife Area

Accessed from Oconto County Highway Y, approximately 1.5 miles northeast of the City of Oconto. A viewing platform is available at the south end of the marsh and a mowed dike can be hiked. This property naturally provides shorebird and marsh bird viewing opportunities. Specific drawdowns aren’t planned at this time but drying conditions have exposed areas attractive to shorebirds. Small parking areas and road side parking is available.

4: Wolf River Bottoms Wildlife Area - Herb Behnke Unit

Eagle Flowage in the northern part of Wolf River Bottoms Wildlife Area-Herb Behnke Unit is being drawn down. It should have some good mudflats once water is lowered.

This wildlife area is about 6 miles north of Shicton on Hwy M—from Hwy 54, turn north on Hwy 76 for 2.1 miles then turn on Hwy M and proceed 4 miles. Park in the third parking lot from the south or second parking lot from the north on Hwy M (west side) and follow the internal road back to the flowage.

5: Little Hope Millpond

The Little Hope Millpond in Waupaca County has been drawndown since 2012 for dam repairs and may provide mudflats for shorebird viewing.

Directions: From Hwy. 10 in Waupaca, take the Hwy. 22 exit and continue southwest approximately 0.6 miles. Turn left (south) onto Hwy. K and continue approximately 1.25 miles before reaching the Little Hope Millpond. Viewing access is limited along Hwy. K.

9: White River Flowage - Ashland County

The White River Flowage is being drawn down for dam repairs.

From Ashland, travel approximately 5 miles south on Hwy. 112. Park along the access road on the east side of the highway just north of the dam and opposite the mudflats.

Más sobre White River Flowage - Ashland County

10: Dueholm Flowage - Fish Lake SWA

Dueholm Flowage has good mudflats as a planned drawdown. Check other flowages at Fish Lake and Crex Meadows SWAs for additional habitat if in the area.

Access is off Stolte Rd north of Burnett County Highway O south of Grantsburg.

11: Bong SRA - Vern Wolf Lake

The dam failed this spring and the lake has been drawn down all summer.  The majority of the 125 acre lake is mud flats, with small pockets of water.

The best vantages are the boat launch on the west side of the lake, the boardwalk viewing platform straight south of the visitors center, and the eastern side of the lake near where 18th St intersects Hwy 75 (you can park
on the shoulder of 18th and walk across to the access point). You cannot view all available habitat from any one of these locations, so patience and checking multiple vantages is suggested to anyone who comes to investigate this spot.

19: Rainbow Flowage

WARNING: May NOT have suitable habitat depending on water levels (keep reading...).

Part of the Wisconsin River system, water levels are controlled by the Wisconsin Valley Improvement Company. In drier years, water levels are lowered in late summer creating the northwoods' best shorebird habitat along the east side of the flowage. In wetter years, there is no habitat due to high water.

Check the water level report at http://wvic.com/WaterReports/Water_Level_Report.cfm for latest conditions. Water levels need to be at least 4-5 feet below maximum for shorebird habitat. As of the last week of August, the level was about 6 feet below max, meaning some habitat should be present and checked for birds.

If habitat is present the best access is from the dead end parking lot at the end of Oxbow Road, off of Cty O east of the flowage. Off-road hikers can also try walking northwest from the Swamp Rd parking lot north of Cty D.

21: Theresa Marsh SWA

Three small waterfowl impoundments along Hwy 28 on Theresa MarshWildlife Area in Washington County will be drawn down from August through earlySeptember to allow moist soil vegetation growth, offering shorebird viewing fora few weeks and marsh bird and waterfowl viewing during the fall as waterlevels are slowly raised.   The bestshorebird viewing area in August will likely be on the small 10-acre impoundment north and east of the “LegacyGreenwing” sign on State Hwy 28, about one half mile west of the Hwy 41/Hwy 29intersection.

During August, visitorsmay park at the pull-off area near the Greenwing sign and walk the dike topsaround the impoundments.  Effective Sept1st each year all impoundments on both sides of Hwy 28 are closed topublic entry as no-entry Waterfowl Refuge regulations are in place Sept 1through the start of the gun deer season. Viewing opportunities during that time are limited to the Hwy 28 rightof ways.

28: Hustisford

Exit Hwy 60 by gas station next to river, turn right on Rubicon St. Continue and take first right turn on Mill St.. Go 2 blocks and you will run into E. Griffith St. There is parking on E. Griffith with the river just on the other side of it. If there are shorebirds they are generally just north of the power substation. Lions Park is between E. Griffith and the river for viewing and the shoreline can be walked east to behind the power substation.

If we get abundant rain the water level can rise enough to make the area unsuitable for most shorebirds. So far this hasn't been a problem.

30: Manitowoc River - Collins Rd

Shorebirds are being seen on either side of the bridge as river levels drop. Park along the road north of the bridge and slowly walk to the bridge, being careful not to flush the birds. There is more traffic on the bridge this year because of the road construction on Hwy W, so care should be taken.

If the weather remains dry, this spot will remain good for shorebirds into September.
