The remains of an adult male were found June 21, 2003 in a field in the 4800 block of Northeast Belknap Court in Hillsboro by a landscaper clearing blackberry bushes. Police found a human skull in the field, and then located a shallow grave with more remains nearby. In the grave, detectives found several pieces of identification for Jose Socorro Chavez, police reports show. Investigators believe the remains are Socorro, who would have been 48 at the time, according to police reports. The reports indicate that Socorro was murdered sometime between March 25, 2000 and June 21, 2003, and that he died of a blunt force injury to his head. The case remains unsolved. Socorro was homeless and had spent time at the Portland Rescue Mission, according to the reports.
