The inside of Mama's Bakery on a Saturday morning is a perfect snapshot of downtown Florence: American girls in workout clothes leave with cups of coffee in hand, ready to enjoy on their leisurely walk home; a group of Florentine moms sit and chat, their bundled-up babies grabbing at their blueberry muffins; locals pop in to get a real New York bagel, just like the ones they ate on their last trip to the States.
It is no coincidence that the new American bakery in town is a lesson in multiculturalism: owners Cristina and Matt have brought their best Tuscan and American selves into the kitchen. After years of living in two countries, the formula they decided on was simple-think about what they miss most about American cafes and create it in Florence. The results are delicious-bagels, brownies, muffins, apple pie, chocolate chip cookies, quiche and deli-style sandwiches, American coffee and much, much more-and can be taken to go or enjoyed with a copy of The Florentine at one of the tables or oversized chairs ...just like home.
