According to a Chinese legend, Phuket island is a sea dragon emerging from the Indian Ocean. Tradition holds that this dragon, Hai Leng Ong, is duty-bound to protect Phuket and its visitors. There is a large golden dragon statue at Queen Sirikit Park next to the TAT office and some processions stop here to give blessings during the festival.
