In 1507, the Portuguese sacked the Muscat but in 1650 the Imams regained power, spreading the maritime empire. The island is a natural barrier from the sea. In order to attack the central harbor off the coast of the Seyyidâ??s Palace, one would have to go into Muscat cove and pass by one of the two forts.
