Guardian's Peter Beaumont reports that fighting began in the town of Zawiyah, 19 miles from Tripoli, after several military vehicles carrying government soldiers, from the Khamis Brigade, tried to enter the town. Around 12 modern tanks were moved to Zawiyah, and 6 BM-21 truck-mounted Grad rocket-launchers. Protestors managed to damage a tank with a rocket-propelled grenade, after which the mercenaries fled. 10 soldiers were killed in the exchange of fire. A resident reports that Gadaffi had called the tribal leader of the town, Mohammed al-Maktouf, and said that if the rebels did not leave the main square by early Tuesday, the town would be hit by warplanes.
