Sun Ra (1914 – 1993) was a jazz musician piano and synthesizer player, poet and philosopher known for his "cosmic philosophy," musical compositions and performances. Ra claimed that he was part of the "Angel Race" and not from Earth, but from Saturn.
His band The Arkestra was an ensemble with an ever-changing lineup and name with Sun Ra at the head. His music was extremely varied with influences from virtually the entire history of jazz including ragtime, swing music, bebop and free jazz. He was also a pioneer of electronic music and space music being one of the first musicians to make extensive use of electronic keyboards.
